Lithium Marketing field guide

How long does SEO take?

Technical fixes within 30 days, local rankings in 60 to 90 days and revenue that compounds from month four, plus what speeds it up or slows it down.

  • Months two and three
  • Month four on

The short answer

Weeks for the first fixes, months for the revenue.

SEO for a local business typically shows its first movement within 30 days, as technical fixes take effect. Local and long-tail rankings tend to move in 60 to 90 days. Revenue compounds from month four, as more pages rank, reviews build and each month’s work adds to the last. The most competitive searches in big markets take longer, and how much longer depends on who you’re up against.

That’s the pattern Lithium plans around. It isn’t a promise of a ranking by a date. Nobody controls Google, and anyone who guarantees the top spot by a deadline is guessing or bending the rules. What we guarantee is the work.

Google itself says a change to a website can show up in search within hours or take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change helped. Pages have to be crawled, indexed and then judged against every other page competing for the same search. That takes time no agency can skip.

The good news: SEO keeps paying after the work is done. A page that ranks keeps bringing in calls month after month, which is why the results build on each other.

Month by month

What happens, and what you should see, at each stage.

A typical local SEO timeline
StageThe workWhat you should see
Month oneAudit, technical fixes, tracking, Business Profile cleanup, keyword research and the page planA list of completed fixes, working call and form tracking, and first movement from the technical work
Months two and threeService and town pages built or rewritten, review requests running, listings fixed, first local linksLocal and long-tail rankings moving, more profile views and calls, new pages indexed
Month four onMore content, steady reviews and links, testing pages that rank but don’t convertRevenue compounding as more pages rank, map rankings spreading further across your service area
Beyond six monthsExpanding into new services and towns, defending the rankings you’ve wonProgress on the most competitive searches, a steady base of organic calls

The first month often feels quiet from the outside. Most of the work is underneath: fixing what stops pages from ranking and setting up tracking so you can see what works later. Judge month one by the work completed and months two and three by the first movement. Judge the investment from month four on, by calls and booked jobs.

Faster or slower

Six things that change how long SEO takes.

1

Your competition

A roofer in a small town with three competitors moves faster than a roofer in a big city with forty, several of them spending heavily on SEO.

2

Where the site starts

A site with broken pages, slow load times or missing service pages has more to fix before it can rank. A clean site with a few gaps moves sooner.

3

Your history

An established domain with some reviews and links has a head start. A brand-new site and profile start from nothing.

4

Your Business Profile

A verified, complete profile can climb quickly. One that is unverified, suspended or stuck in processing has to be sorted out first.

5

How fast the work ships

Pages that sit waiting for approval don’t rank. Quick answers on services, photos and project details speed everything up.

6

Reviews and links

A steady flow of new reviews and local links builds trust month after month. Long gaps slow the climb.

If your profile isn’t verified or has been suspended, fix that first; our guides to a profile stuck in processing and a suspended profile explain how.

Why it takes time

Google has to find, process and trust the changes.

Every change goes through three steps on Google’s side. It has to be crawled, when Google visits the page again. It has to be indexed, when Google processes and stores it. Then it has to rank, when Google compares it with every other page for each search. A page can be crawled and still not be indexed, or indexed and still not show for the search you want.

You can help with the first two. Keep the site fast and crawlable, submit a sitemap in Search Console and request a recrawl after big changes. Google says a recrawl request doesn’t guarantee quick inclusion and asking again doesn’t help, so request it once and move on.

The third step is about trust, and trust builds slowly: reviews arriving each week, other sites linking to you, pages that answer questions well enough that people stay. None of those can be rushed without breaking Google’s rules, and shortcuts like bought links or fake reviews can set a business back further than where it started.

If you need calls now, run ads while SEO builds. Google Ads typically starts bringing calls within the first week, and Lithium manages them from $500 a month plus ad spend. Our SEO vs. PPC guide explains how the two work together.

Judge the plan

What a realistic SEO timeline looks like in practice.

Results from Lithium clients show what the timeline can add up to. Drake’s 7 Dees grew organic traffic 380% in one year. Working with Lithium, F&W Fence Co. went from 3 to 28 top-three rankings and grew organic traffic 138% to more than 630 visits a month. Neither happened in a month.

When you compare agencies, watch for these red flags:

  • A guaranteed first-page or first-place ranking by a date.
  • Results promised in days.
  • Reports full of traffic charts with no calls, forms or jobs.
  • An agency that owns your website, profile or analytics accounts.

Lithium’s SEO service runs on a six-month agreement, then month to month with 30 days’ notice. Six months covers the ramp in the table above. A typical local SEO retainer is $1,300 to $3,000 a month; our guide to how much SEO costs breaks it down, and the local SEO checklist shows where your site stands today.

Can I make Google rank my pages faster?

Not directly. You can help Google find changes sooner by keeping the site crawlable, submitting a sitemap and requesting a recrawl in Search Console. Google says a recrawl request doesn’t guarantee quick inclusion, and repeating it doesn’t speed things up.

What should an early SEO report show?

The work done: technical fixes, pages built or rewritten, Business Profile changes, listings fixed and tracking that works. Early rankings may move for long-tail searches, but the first month is mostly about the work, not the results.

Why did one page rank sooner than another?

Each page starts from a different place and targets a different search. A page fixing a small problem on a low-competition search can move in weeks; a new page for a busy search takes longer.

Should I stop SEO once I rank?

Not completely. Rankings slip when competitors keep working and you stop. Many businesses drop to a lighter plan once the main pages rank, keeping reviews, content and links moving.

Is SEO worth it if I need calls this month?

Yes, paired with ads. Run ads for the calls you need now and start SEO for the calls you want later. Ads stop when the budget stops; SEO keeps working after the work is done.
