The term
AEO means being the answer, not one of ten links.
AEO, short for answer engine optimization, is the work of making your website the source AI search tools pull from when they answer a customer’s question. An answer engine is any search product that replies with a written answer instead of a list of links: Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini. Featured snippets and voice assistants did a smaller version of the same thing for years.
These tools write a short answer and cite a handful of sources. Ask one “how much does it cost to replace a water heater” or “do I need a permit to build a deck” and you get two paragraphs with three or four links beside them. AEO is the work that makes your page one of those links, and your business the one the answer names when the question turns local, like “who replaces water heaters near me.”
For a plumber, roofer or remodeler, this matters because the question comes before the call. A homeowner who reads an answer about tankless heaters and sees your company cited in it calls you already trusting you. A homeowner who never sees your name calls whoever the answer did name.
AEO and SEO
AEO sits on top of SEO, not beside it.
Answer engines don’t invent their sources. Google’s AI features draw on Google’s own index, and Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet before it can appear as a supporting link. ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot send their own crawlers and lean on search indexes too. In every case, a page that can’t be crawled or ranked is a page no AI will quote.
Google’s AI features guidance says the established SEO practices still apply, and that you don’t need special markup, AI text files or new technical work to appear. That’s why we treat AEO as part of SEO. The foundation is the same: a fast, crawlable site, a clear page for each service, internal links between them, steady reviews and a Google Business Profile with correct details.
What AEO adds is a change in format and in standards. A page written for ten blue links can bury its answer in paragraph six. A page written for an answer engine states the answer in its first two sentences, backs it with specifics and keeps every fact about the business identical everywhere that fact appears.
| Question | SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| The goal | Rank your page in the search results | Get your page cited and your business named in the answer |
| What wins | Relevance, links, reviews and page quality | All of that, plus a direct answer and specific, consistent facts |
| Where it shows | Organic results and the Map Pack | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and featured snippets |
| How you check it | Rankings, clicks and tracked calls | Search Console totals, AI referral visits in GA4 and spot checks of the answers |
The work
What AEO looks like on a contractor’s website.
Strip away the acronym and AEO comes down to six jobs. None of them is exotic, and you can check each one on your own site in an afternoon.
Answer-first blocks
Each key question gets a two- or three-sentence answer at the top of its section, written so it still makes sense when quoted alone. “We replace most standard tank water heaters the same day” beats “Every home is different.”
Specific facts
Price ranges, timelines, service areas, the brands you install, licenses and warranties. An answer engine can only repeat what a page states, so a page that commits to specifics gives it something to repeat.
Consistent business facts
Your name, phone, address, hours and services should match on your site, your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and the major directories. Conflicting facts hand an AI two answers to choose between.
Schema that matches the page
Structured data labels your business, services and questions in code. It must describe what the page visibly says and nothing more.
Topical depth
One page per service, plus pages for the questions around it: cost, timing, repair or replace, what to expect on the day. Depth shows a search system you cover the topic, not one keyword.
Crawler access
Robots rules that let Googlebot, Bingbot and the AI search crawlers in, pages whose text loads without waiting on scripts, and nothing important locked behind a form.
The full answer engine optimization guide walks through each of these jobs step by step, with a worked example. The structured data guide covers the schema piece on its own. If a term here is new to you, the marketing glossary defines it in a sentence or two.
Clear up the myths
What AEO is not.
It isn’t a separate algorithm. Google’s AI features run on the same index as regular search. Anyone selling AEO as a secret second channel that ignores your rankings is selling a label.
It isn’t a file. An llms.txt file is a proposed convention for pointing AI tools at your best pages. We add one to the sites we build because it takes minutes, but Google says you don’t need one for its AI features, and no file makes up for thin pages.
It isn’t a guarantee. Nobody controls which sources an AI tool cites on a given day, and the answers shift from one search to the next. An agency that promises you a ChatGPT mention is promising something it can’t deliver. What we guarantee is the work.
It isn’t a separate bill. At Lithium Marketing, AEO and its cousin GEO are part of every SEO program , which typically runs $1,300 to $3,000 a month; the AI SEO service page explains how it fits. The work shows up in client results: Sarkinen Plumbing holds 44 number-one rankings in AI search, and Dixie Glass has 39 AI mentions and an AI audience reach of more than 150,000.
If you’re hearing AEO and GEO in the same proposal and wondering whether you’re paying twice, read AEO vs GEO vs SEO . It explains what each label means when an agency sells it.
Try it yourself
Three checks you can run in ten minutes.
Ask the answer engines your customers’ questions. Type the question you hear most on the phone into Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity, with your town on the end. Note who gets cited. If it’s a national directory or a competitor, that’s the page you need to beat.
Read the first two sentences of your best service page. Do they say what you do, where, and for whom? If they open with “Welcome to our website” or a slogan, an answer engine has nothing to quote.
Compare your business facts. Open your website footer, your Google Business Profile and your listing on one big directory side by side. If the hours, phone number or service list differ, fix them first. It’s the cheapest AEO work there is.
For the Google side specifically, how to appear in Google AI Overviews explains how Google picks its sources. And if you already invest in SEO, why your SEO is already most of your AI search strategy covers what’s left to add.
