San Diego marketing, explained

Four channels, one plan for a San Diego service business

A service business in San Diego usually needs four things pulling in the same direction: a website that turns visitors into calls, search work that puts it in front of people who are looking, ads for the jobs it wants sooner and someone answering the phone. Lithium Marketing runs all four from one plan, so a customer one service finds doesn’t slip away through another. The San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad metro area counts 3,282,248 people, and that plan can reach as much or as little of it as your crews cover.

The San Diego River runs through the middle of San Diego from east to west, creating a valley that helps divide the city into northern and southern segments. If your crews stick to one side, every channel follows that choice: the website names the communities you serve, the Google profile lists them, the ads target them and the receptionist checks each caller’s address against them.

Population and movement

Slow growth, a moving population and your San Diego plan

San Diego grew 1.6% from 2020 to 2025, to 1,406,106 residents. In a city adding people slowly, keeping the customers you already have matters as much as finding new ones, which is where review requests and repeat-customer follow-up earn their place.

San Diego has experienced negative net migration since 2004, and a significant number of people have moved to adjacent Riverside County while still commuting to jobs in San Diego. If some of your past customers now live there, decide whether your service area follows them, then make the ads, pages and Google profile match that decision.

The county’s trade mix

Big and small trades across San Diego County

San Diego County’s largest trade group is residential remodeling, at 1,691 businesses, with painting contractors at 456 further down the chart. With that many competitors, the deciding factor is often what a homeowner can see: before-and-after photos on the site, reviews from past customers on the Google profile and ads that link straight to that work.

The county has 25 septic tank services and 85 carpet and upholstery cleaners, two specialties with far fewer competitors. A small specialty still needs its own pages and a complete Google profile, so a customer who searches for that one service finds a page that names it.

Order of work

The sequence we follow for a San Diego business

Nothing gets more budget until the calls it already brings are counted.

1

Measure before spending

Before any budget moves, tracked numbers and form tags go in, and a month of data shows which channel is producing your work and which is coasting.

2

Fix the biggest leak first

That might be a site that loads slowly on phones, a Google profile missing half your services or a phone that rings out after five; whichever loses the most jobs gets fixed before anything new is added.

3

Write pages every channel can use

Each service and community you want more of gets a page, and that page becomes the landing page for ads, the target for SEO and the source of answers for the receptionist.

4

Review the numbers each month

A monthly report counts calls, forms and booked jobs by channel, and a co-founder uses it to decide where next month’s effort and budget should go.

FAQ

Handing your San Diego marketing to one team: common questions

DJ Van Zanten

Still curious?

Call (503) 766-5964 or email [email protected].

How does Lithium work with a San Diego business from Portland?

Remotely, through video calls, email and shared reports. Lithium is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, with a team in Portland, Bend and Seattle, working with every client by video. For a San Diego business that means co-founder strategy calls on screen, Allison McKenney as your account manager for the day-to-day and reports you can open from the truck. None of the work depends on anyone visiting.

Can I start with one service and add the rest later?

Many clients do. Pick the gap that costs you the most work, such as a slow site, a thin Google profile or missed calls, and add another service when the tracked numbers show the first one is paying. Because one call-tracking setup covers every service, the second one you add is measured against the first on equal terms.

What contract comes with each service?

Month to month, once the first six months are done. That is how most services run, and 30 days’ notice ends them. The AI receptionist has no contract at all and can be canceled anytime. A website is a one-time project with its price agreed before the build, and anything we build for you stays yours if you leave.

Do you work with businesses outside the trades?

Plumbers, roofers, electricians and landscapers make up most of Lithium’s client list, alongside current clients in manufacturing, insurance agencies and real estate. The approach carries over to any business whose customers look on Google before they call: tracked calls, a page for each service and a phone that gets answered.

Can you take over from the agency we use now?

Yes. We start by getting access to your website, Google Business Profile, ad accounts and call tracking, and we check that each one is owned in your company’s name; anything held by the old agency gets moved over. Then we compare the past year’s calls and leads with what you were paying, so the handover starts from a clear baseline.
